Bergey’s Manual Of Determinative Bacteriology 9th Edition

PREFACE The ninth edition of Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology  is a departure from past editions that attempted  to merge the separate microbiology of pure culture and general microbiology. Where possible, the pertinent information is now  included in the main portion of the  Manual. The information formerly in sections now  belonging in the purview of the latter, is now spread between  the main work and the Detailed Manual. The practical result is that  the reader is now much better informed of the microbiologic  background than in any previous edition. Nevertheless, all are cautioned that even in the  main portion of the work there are important details that are  only briefly mentioned or that are not mentioned at all. These  are due to the difficulty of describing the complex  structure of the bacterial cell and to the wide range of  conditions that affect it. A brief account is given below  of the changes that have been made in the ninth edition. More  detail will be found in Bergey’s Manual of Determinative  Bacteriology, Ninth Edition (1992).1  The publication of a manual of this nature is more easily  understood when the beginning is followed by a preface.  The present preface is written by the editor, Dr. Howard M. Bergholz. The  Manual was composed by the editorial staff of the  Editors Guild of the American Society for Microbiology  in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to the staff of the  Editors Guild, the Manual has also  been edited by Drs. Leroy Jones, W. J. Mobley, and  R. H. Anderson. Drs. Mobley and Anderson have been assisting with  some of the sections.  Published by The American Society for Microbiology and Dr. R. H.  Anderson, Publishers, Inc., Exton, PA 19061, ISBN 0-9625110-0-X. The contents of this Manual are in the  public domain, except where the rules of the publishing  society prohibit such use. Anyone is free to make copies and  distribute them freely so long as the source of the

This manual has no pretense of being a complete treatise on bacteriology. It is designed mainly to serve as a reference in the laboratory.,The three broad divisions of the manual may be roughly regarded as follows: General Principles of Bacteriology, Lists of Bacterial Species, and Laboratory Techniques. Laboratory techniques are of three kinds: simple technique, immunological techniques, and other, and in each case are covered in more or less detail. Preface to the Ninth Edition A feature which will be noticed at once is the fact that the manual is now produced on a larger scale than in previous editions. 1. The cost of printing has been vastly increased ; and, for this reason, in the interest of economy, the hand binder has been omitted, the report and notes being typeset in a kind of what is called, font. Several minor corrections have been made in the text and index, and the corrections have been verified. An alphabetical List of authors has been added to the index, and short notes showing the relative importance of the authors have been inserted where desired. Of special interest to the bacteriological laboratory are the tables of results, reagents, etc., of the various tests used in bacteriology, along with the corresponding explanations of their use., The most important revision in the content of the manual is the revision of the B. B. section, which has been made the basis for the, direct identification of the B. B. section in which any new species or group of species may be found. This is explained fully in the Technical Index. It has become impossible to adequately address the labor involved in producing a manual covering such a broad field as bacteriology. This manual will, therefore, be valued only insofar as it serves to guide the reader to an extensive and complete literature on bacteriology. Preface to the Ninth Edition The Manual of Determinative Bacteriology may be used as a basic manual for the lecture room or laboratory, or as a reference book for medical students, for hospital staff, and, above all, for bacteriological researchers.,Whether used in the former or the latter sense, the Manual of Determinative Bacteriology will, therefore, be sure to meet some definite need in bacteriology. As with each edition, this one, too, is divided into three broad sections. Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology 9th Edition General 0cc13bf012

( PREFACE The ninth edition of Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology is a departure from past editions that attempted, usually inadequately, to accurately and thoroughly present the bacteriology and pathobiology of the over 700 bacterial species recognized at the time of writing. The manual describes the general characteristics of some 78 genera and over 1,000 species including those first described. To illustrate the key features of the manual, Chapters 8 to 16 are devoted to the principal groups of bacteria and to the most important pathogens of man and animals. The rest of the manual is similarly organized and will be found generally consistent in its organization. The Manual is published by The New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Cornell University. SECTION 1 – THE NUCLEAR CYCLE The entire system of plant reproduction and metabolism involves a cycle of nucleic acid synthesis in the male and female gametes. At the heart of this cycle is a vast biosynthetic process, the nucleic acid synthesis, which serves as the foundation of all the molecular activity of the cell. Whether one looks at the gigantic synthesis of RNA, the synthesis of nucleoprotein or the synthesis of one of the many kinds of DNA, the synthesis of the four nucleic acid bases is the same. In addition, it is the same in all species, whatever their taxonomic origin. Nuclear division, which takes place during the preparation of the germ cells, and that endures throughout the life of the cell, is just one of the activities of the cell which require the participation of nucleic acids. The nucleic acids also have a role in regulation of the synthesis of proteins and metabolites. In this chapter, we will examine the nucleic acid synthesis. (For a more detailed analysis of the general processes of nucleic acid synthesis and regulation, see Chapter 4, pages 68 to 80.) A “nucleic acid” is a large molecule containing nitrogen and carbon and, usually, a considerable amount of hydrogen, formed from pyrimidine bases (thymine, cytosine, and uracil) or purine bases (adenine and guanine). Four bases can associate in various nucleotides, in “adenylate,” “guanylate,” and “thymidylate.” It is these combinations which are the
